Clearly, the media needs a continual education in why the mafia genre is so successful. It has more to do with defamation than art.

That is correct. Racism against Italians goes across the board. I live in the the South and have experienced racism and bias from all kinds of people: conservative white guys, liberal virtue-signaling women, Jewish people, and foreigners living in the US, with liberal women being the most callous and sarcastic about it.
I would like to know more details about the bias you refer to. I have family that recently moved to the South and they have experienced some bias as well. Perhaps we can discuss in private if you are willing.
1) Old school Southern racism (“Italians are not white”).
2) Religious bias (“Catholics are not real Christian”).
3) Countless racist casual jokes (social life).
4) Several gross racist remarks in professional and higher education environments. Example: I was asked by a colleague if my family has ever killed anybody. Usually, people are afraid of HR (not when it comes to insulting Italians).
5) I have met people who have clearly told me that they do not like Italians. A friend said “they brought ignorance to the US”.
6) I was asked if I was Sicilian during civil dispute proceeding by a professional involved in the dispute. Sicilian stereotypes were brought up during the dispute.
I am not Sicilian and my ethnicity had nothing to do with the case.
Keep in mind I am Italian, not Italian-American. I am not surprised that your family has experienced bias. It is very common.
God help Italians involved in criminal cases in the U.S.. See what happened to Chico Forti, a windsurf champion from Trentino Alto Adige. Even if guilty, absurd organized crime allegations were brought up during the criminal proceedings.
