Last week, speaking before Democrats at a holiday celebration House Speaker Nancy Pelosi may have hit the punch bowl a bit early. She exclaimed, “Our country could not be more – it could not be better served, than with this most experienced, capable hands than yours, President Biden. He’s just perfect! … And Madam Vice President, we’re inspired by your work for the people as you continue to be a valuable partner to President Biden.”
Both Pelosi’s grammar and honesty were wince-worthy. Like her stillborn Build Back Better bill, she is clinging to some dead wood in the White House. Our nation is not in capable hands. And this isn’t just a partisan opinion. Democratic allies have called for Biden to reject a run in 2024 and to declare so now to save the party.
If Joe Biden is Pelosi’s hero, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) is her worst enemy. Manchin (orig: Mancini) has fatally crippled Pelosi’s utopian BBB bill. He considers it’s insane and irresponsible – by reason of unbearable cost and social dependency on government handouts. Despite whatever pork his state was offered and the sweet-talking, Manchin is dug in. Here’s what Pelosi had to say about him back in September during the sweet-talk phase:
“I think Joe Manchin is a great member of the Senate. We’re friends. We’re Italian-Americans. We get along. Catholic. We have shared values. I have enormous respect for him. I have one of the joys of my service in Congress was to work with him…”
Bet she doesn’t feel that way now. I like to think that the Italic people are a common sense folk. (My favorite example is a joke the pragmatic Romans told about theoretical Greeks: “They can tell you the distance from the Earth to the moon, but they don’t know how far it is to Athens.”) However, Pelosi and some of her Italian American colleagues have been sucked into a utopian fantasy that denies human nature and our ancestral values. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) labels Pelosi’s absurd attempts to transform America overnight “Alice in Wonderland.” The Speaker has already transformed the House, operating it by proxy – members don’t have to show up to vote, and those that do show must wear masks. In contrast, the Senate functions normally – no Covid outbreaks reported.
Our cugini are natural resisters, on both sides of the aisle. When Donald Trump met with advisors in December, 2020 over Swedish meatballs to undo his election defeat, White House attorney Pat (Pasquale) Cipollone almost came to blows with Trump fanatics who offered crazy ideas for a do-over election. Cipollone, who had defended Trump during two impeachments, was almost fired between meatballs for his rational arguments. Even Trump advisor Chris (Grasso) Christie called Trump’s fanatical wing a “national embarrassment.”
Elsewhere, Italian Americans are facing down what they consider absurd diktats by the Biden regime. Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is resisting Biden’s clandestine transfer of illegal aliens to his state which he calls “a mass human smuggling operation,” from the southern border to various states. He has budgeted $8 million to re-gift the aliens to Delaware and Martha’s Vineyard. He has already banned the airlines and bus companies who ferry the aliens from doing business with his state. The wee-hour dumpings have now stopped.
DeSantis has also retained activist Christopher Rufo, who sounded the national alarm about the racist Critical Race Theory (CRT) infiltrating school curricula. Florida has now banned the race-baiting propaganda coming out of Washington. Florida has also banned Biden mandates for masks and vaccines (voluntary permitted). Florida has successfully kept schools and businesses open, mandate-free for two years – a media secret! (as of 12/16/21 the per capita Covid death rate: NJ-322, NY-300, Fl-289)
Speaking of vaccines, plans to vaccinate all U.S. military personnel have set off a revolt in some National Guard units. It started in November with Oklahoma, where Brig. General Thomas Mancino (another troublemaker!) countermanded the vaccine mandate for his troops. Alaska, Iowa, Mississippi, Nebraska, and Wyoming have joined the rebellion. These states fear losing guardsmen needed for state emergencies. It’s hard to separate caution from absurdity.
This may be the Age of Confusion. -JLM
We are in serious trouble with the people in power!
I do not think it is a case that many prominent fiscal conservatives in the US are Italian-Americans (Manchin, Scalise, Gianforte, DeSantis, etc). My understanding is that being a welfare recipient was seen as something to be ashamed of, among Italian-American communities in the 60s and 70s (when massive welfare programs kicked in). That also caused some tension between Italians and minorities that have a high rate of welfare recipients. I think that is when Italians start referring themselves as “hard-working” Italians.
I did not grow up in those communities. It would be interesting to hear from Italians who did and can confirm my understanding is correct.
